6. If it's summertime, turn the Air Conditioning on full blast to start the drying process.

First comes smoke damage.

The sharp smell of smoke woke me up. When I investigated, I found that the fireplace damper was closed, and the fireplace smoke had been accumulating inside the house!  Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the smoke odor permeated into all of our belongings and furnishings in our Rupert home.
